Arthritis encompasses a group of over 100 medical conditions affecting the joints, characterized by symptoms like pain, stiffness, inflammation, and joint damage. These symptoms can extend beyond the joints to cause muscle weakness, joint instability, and even physical deformities, impacting basic daily activities such as walking, eating, and dressing.

Arthritis is not solely a consequence of aging. While its prevalence increases with age, millions of younger individuals are affected, often due to genetic predisposition or other underlying conditions. Early diagnosis and intervention are critical, as research suggests they can delay disease progression and improve quality of life.

Common Types of Arthritis

  1. Osteoarthritis (OA)

    • A degenerative joint disease characterized by the breakdown of cartilage, leading to pain, swelling, and reduced joint function.

    • Common Areas Affected: Weight-bearing joints such as knees, hips, and the spine.

    • Cause: Often due to aging, repetitive stress, or previous injuries.

  2. Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA)

    • An autoimmune condition where the immune system attacks the synovium (joint lining), causing inflammation and joint damage.

    • Common Areas Affected: Hands, wrists, and feet, but it can affect multiple joints symmetrically.

    • Cause: Triggered by immune dysregulation, potentially influenced by genetic and environmental factors.

  3. Psoriatic Arthritis (PsA)

    • An inflammatory arthritis associated with psoriasis, characterized by joint pain, stiffness, and swelling.

    • Common Areas Affected: Fingers, toes, spine, and larger joints.

    • Cause: Likely autoimmune, with genetic predisposition playing a role.

Less Common Types of Arthritis

  1. Ankylosing Spondylitis (AS)

    • A chronic inflammatory condition primarily affecting the spine, leading to stiffness and potential fusion of vertebrae.

  2. Lupus (Systemic Lupus Erythematosus)

    • Definition: A systemic autoimmune disease causing widespread inflammation, including joint pain and swelling.

  3. Juvenile Arthritis

    • Arthritis diagnosed in children, often involving inflammation and stiffness in multiple joints.

  4. Scleroderma

    • Definition: A group of autoimmune diseases causing skin thickening and joint pain due to excessive collagen production.

Causes of Arthritis

Arthritis can result from various factors, including:

  • Degenerative Changes: Wear and tear on cartilage over time.

  • Autoimmune Reactions: The immune system mistakenly attacks healthy joint tissues.

  • Genetics: A family history of arthritis increases susceptibility.

  • Injury: Trauma to joints can trigger arthritis.

Diagnosing and Treating Arthritis

While there is no cure for arthritis, early and accurate diagnosis is crucial for effective management. A comprehensive evaluation by a rheumatologist or physiotherapist may include:

  • Medical history and physical examination.

  • Imaging (e.g., X-rays, MRIs) to assess joint damage.

  • Blood tests for autoimmune markers, especially in RA and Lupus.

Treatment Options:

  • Physiotherapy: Improves joint function, strengthens muscles, and alleviates pain.

  • Medications: Anti-inflammatory drugs, disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs), or biologics.

  • Lifestyle Changes: Weight management, exercise, and ergonomic adjustments.

  • Surgical Interventions: Joint replacement or repair for advanced cases.

Improving Quality of Life

With tailored treatments and professional support, most individuals with arthritis can lead active, fulfilling lives. Consult your physiotherapist or healthcare provider for personalized advice and therapies designed to reduce discomfort, enhance mobility, and improve your overall well-being.
