If you or a loved one is living with a disability, the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) can help you access the support you need to live as independently as possible and achieve your goals. Physiotherapy is one of the many services that may be funded under the NDIS to support mobility, manage pain, and enhance quality of life.
Here’s a simple guide to understanding how physiotherapy fits into NDIS plans and how you can access this service.
1. How Does Physiotherapy Fit Into NDIS Plans?
Physiotherapy is an important service for many NDIS participants, particularly those managing physical disabilities, chronic pain, or mobility challenges. The NDIS may fund physiotherapy if it is considered "reasonable and necessary" to help you achieve your individual goals.
Physiotherapy may be funded if it supports you to:
Improve strength, balance, or mobility.
Recover from surgery or manage long-term conditions.
Reduce the risk of falls or other injuries.
Participate in daily activities and engage with your community.
2. How to Include Physiotherapy in Your NDIS Plan
To include physiotherapy in your NDIS plan, follow these steps:
Plan Review or Meeting
During your NDIS planning or review meeting, discuss how physiotherapy may help you achieve your goals. Be specific about what you’d like to improve, such as mobility, pain management, or greater independence.
Get Supporting Evidence
A letter or report from your GP, physiotherapist, or another healthcare provider can explain how physiotherapy may support your needs. This evidence can outline your current challenges, how physiotherapy may assist, and expected outcomes.
Budget Allocation
Physiotherapy is generally funded under the Improved Daily Living or Capacity
Building budgets in your NDIS plan. Work with your planner to ensure adequate funding for the sessions you require.
Choose a Provider
You can select either a registered or unregistered NDIS provider. Sunrise Rehab is an unregistered provider, which means we can work with participants who self-manage their plans or use plan management services. If your plan is agency-managed, you will need to select a registered provider.
3. Benefits of Physiotherapy in an NDIS Plan
Physiotherapy may support you in working toward meaningful goals, such as:
Increasing independence in daily activities.
Managing discomfort or improving mobility.
Regaining strength and confidence after surgery or injury.
Your physiotherapist can develop a personalised treatment plan based on your needs and goals to help support your mobility and quality of life.
4. Questions or Concerns?
If you’re unsure how to include physiotherapy in your NDIS plan, talk to your support coordinator or local area coordinator (LAC). They can provide guidance to ensure your plan reflects your needs and goals.
